Best Time
to Visit
Summer (May to June): The best time to visit the Char Dham as the weather
is pleasant and ideal for trekking and sightseeing. The temples are open for
pilgrims during this time.
Post-Monsoon (September
to October): This is another good
period to visit, as the weather is clearer, and the monsoon rains have
subsided, reducing the risk of landslides.
Winter (November to
March): The temples are closed in
winter due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures. However, if you're planning
to visit the surrounding areas for trekking or to enjoy the snowfall, this
could be an off-season option.
Weather
and Clothing
Summer (May-June): During the summer, the weather is pleasant, but
temperatures can vary significantly between day and night. Pack light cotton
clothes for the day, but bring a light sweater or jacket for the cooler
evenings.
Winter
(November-February): Pack heavy
woolens, thermals, jackets, gloves, and a warm hat. The temperature can drop
significantly, especially in higher altitudes like Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Monsoon (July-August): Avoid visiting during the monsoon due to the risk of
landslides and road closures.
Travel
and Transportation
Road Travel: The Char Dham circuit involves a significant amount
of road travel. Roads can be narrow, winding, and sometimes poorly maintained,
especially during the rainy season. Make sure you travel with experienced
drivers, especially for hilly areas.
Trekking: Kedarnath and Yamunotri involve trekking. The trek to
Kedarnath is around 16 km one way, and the trek to Yamunotri is about 6 km. If
you are not physically fit, consider hiring ponies or palkis for assistance.
Badrinath and Gangotri are
accessible by road and do not require trekking, though some pilgrims like to
trek to Gangotri from Harshil (6 km).
Helicopter Services: Helicopter services are available for Kedarnath,
Badrinath, and Yamunotri to make the journey more convenient for those with
mobility issues or limited time. However, availability is subject to weather
conditions.
Connectivity
Mobile Network: Network coverage can be limited in high-altitude
areas, especially in Kedarnath and Yamunotri. BSNL and Airtel offer relatively
better coverage, but do not expect consistent connectivity.
Internet Access: Internet may be slow or unavailable in remote areas.
If you need constant connectivity, carry a power bank to keep your devices charged.
